Paloma Picasso, Pablo Picasso’s youngest daughter, is best known as a designer for her bright red colors. "Picasso Red" can now be mentioned in the same breath as "Mikli Red" or "Ferrari Red." At the end of the ‘80s, Paloma (a name meaning "dove") dedicated herself to eyewear design and sought out the strongest collaborative partner of the time to help her do so: The eyewear manufacturer Optyl.
At that time, Optyl was already producing eyewear and sunglasses for Christian Dior, Porsche, Dunhill, and Playboy, as well as its own brands Carrera and ViennaLine. That's why the ‘90s vintage Paloma Picasso sunglasses also bear the imprint "Picasso for Viennaline". Back in those days, Optyl was using the material of the same name, which does not seem to age. Even Optyl glasses worn for 30 years show hardly any signs of use and look like new after a short polishing.
So, Paloma Picasso is one of the brands from the famous Optyl era in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. Unfortunately, for reasons of cost, Optyl is hardly ever used in the manufacture of spectacle frames today.
Unlike other designers, however, Paloma Picasso did not just give her name to a major producer, but designed the glasses herself. Therefore, the ‘90s glasses from Picasso are also exclusively colorful women's sunglasses with great patterns. Some of these ‘90s designer sunglasses by Paloma Picasso are so spectacular that prominent musicians adorn themselves with them. Lady Gaga wore the crazy round Picasso 3729 sunglasses several times in 2010 and Will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas was often seen wearing the ‘90s Picasso 3728 'Panorama View’ sunglasses in 2009.
Paloma Picasso was also always keen to add that certain something to her eyewear designs. The Picasso sunglasses cases are also worth mentioning as an original gimmick, as they are stylish and doubly functional in equal measure. On the one hand, the bright red of the cases ensures that you can quickly find your favorite glasses in your handbag. On the other, the spectacle cases can also be used as a wallet as they come with a coin compartment with zipper.
We are very pleased to offer these original ladies’ sunglasses from the great Optyl era even today.
