Thom Browne Eyewear – Classic Tailoring for the Face

A Self-Taught Visionary – Inspired by Vintage Menswear

Thom Browne is the New York designer who never studied fashion formally. Instead, he simply began tailoring second-hand suits by hand, driven by his passion for classic menswear from the 1950s and ’60s.

Slim silhouettes and shortened sleeves and pant legs soon became his signature. Yet to reduce Thom Browne to just cropped suits would be missing the point. His unconventional approach earned him attention across the fashion world, catching the eye of established names like Brooks Brothers Inc. – America’s oldest men’s outfitter – who invited him to collaborate on exclusive collections.

Browne used these partnerships to build momentum for his own label. In 2003, he officially launched Thom Browne Inc., with a signature red-white-blue striped trim that remains a hallmark of the brand. Just three years later, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) named him Menswear Designer of the Year – an honor he would receive more than once.

From Manufacturing to Licensing? Thom Browne Did It Backwards.

The typical eyewear designer journey looks like this: sketch a first model, craft it by hand with trial and error, launch it in the market, and hope it sells. If the collection gains traction, more styles follow. Once demand grows, larger eyewear manufacturers step in, offering licensing deals to scale production professionally.

But Thom Browne – shaped by successful collaborations with fashion heavyweights – did things differently. From the start, he partnered with an industry giant: DITA Eyewear.

In fall 2011, Thom Browne’s first optical collection was born in close collaboration with DITA. John Juniper, one of DITA’s co-founders, is also a long-standing partner of Vintage-Sunglasses.com (you can read more about him in our DITA section: Dita Eyewear

Thom Browne x DITA Eyewear – A Perfect Symbiosis

His decision to rely on DITA’s expertise from the very beginning proved visionary. The result was a line of optical frames and sunglasses of exceptional quality – all made from titanium or acetate, precision-crafted in Japan.

The collection includes now-iconic styles such as the TB106, a panto-shaped sunglass frame worn by Formula 1 driver and fashion aficionado Lewis Hamilton: Thom Browne TB106 Men’s Sunglasses. Or the TB808 – a bold frame with side shields that quickly sold out worldwide: View here

Naturally, every Thom Browne frame features the brand’s signature tricolor stripe on the temple tips and also appears on the custom eyewear case.

2011 – The Year of Eyewear and Womenswear

The same year he launched his eyewear line, Thom Browne also debuted his first full women’s collection – which has since become a mainstay of New York Fashion Week.

Among his most high-profile clients: Michelle Obama. At the 2013 presidential inauguration, the First Lady wore a custom Thom Browne coat dress that is now widely regarded as a modern fashion icon.

Since then, countless female celebrities from the worlds of music and film have been spotted in Thom Browne pieces – often paired with his distinctive sunglasses, now also available in more feminine shapes.

2022 – Thom Browne Brings Eyewear Production In-House

After a successful ten-year licensing partnership with DITA Eyewear, Thom Browne decided in 2022 to bring sunglasses manufacturing back in-house. By then, the brand had acquired enough expertise in the optical industry to confidently manage design and production on its own – and continue developing eyewear collections with the same level of precision and creativity.

We’re excited to see which new Thom Browne optical and sun styles will join our Vintage Sunglasses collection in the future. Will it remain a curated selection of the legendary DITA collaboration pieces – or are new classics just around the corner?
