How many times have you read this phrase before? It feels like this cliché appears in every second eyewear marketing text.

That’s what makes it all the more remarkable that we can truly offer you vintage eyewear that you likely won’t find anywhere else in the world.

We’re talking about Machiavelli eyewear.

Never heard of the brand? No surprise – even in the 1980s, these vintage frames were a hidden gem.

The 1980s Machiavelli Collection – Bold, opulent, and full of character

We admit it: this is eyewear for the few, not for the masses. These designs are anything but conventional. Named after the Italian philosopher, the frames embody exactly what Niccolò Machiavelli described in “The Prince”: unapologetic presence, power, and confidence.

These are statement frames – designed for strong personalities. Definitely not for the shy or those looking to blend in.

Far from mainstream, Machiavelli glasses are extravagant, almost regal – perfectly in line with their namesake’s legacy.

But where do these rare vintage frames come from?

Only true insiders know that Machiavelli eyewear emerged under the creative influence of none other than Luigi Colani. Known for his eccentric designs, Colani made waves in the 1980s with his futuristic eyewear frames. They were bold, unconventional, and yet incredibly functional – thanks to the exceptionally high manufacturing standards.

Colani was one of the first designers to create eyewear using titanium. Living in Japan from 1982 to 1987 while teaching at a Tokyo university, he commissioned a factory in Sabae – Japan’s eyewear capital – to produce his designs. That’s why all early Colani frames are not only titanium, but also proudly Made in Japan.

Despite the high retail price, justified by the premium craftsmanship, the Colani collection was a great success in its time and available at top-tier opticians across Europe.

So what does this have to do with Machiavelli?

Interestingly, Colani exclusively designed full-rim frames. Nowhere in his original collection will you find rimless or semi-rimless designs.

That’s exactly where Machiavelli comes in.

These titanium Machiavelli models, made in the same Sabae factory, follow the same high standards – but they fill a stylistic gap: rimless and semi-rimless frames in bold, expressive shapes. Even the engraved fonts are identical to Colani’s original production.

The only major difference was timing. While Colani’s glasses launched in the early 1980s, Machiavelli frames didn’t appear until the latter part of the decade.

By then, opticians already had years of experience selling these daring styles and understood that they appealed to a small, high-end niche. But consumer behavior was shifting. Price sensitivity began to influence buying decisions more strongly, and affordable frames began to dominate the market.

This trend, which started in the late ’80s, even led to financial troubles for once-iconic brands like Ray-Ban, Cazal, and Optyl – all of which filed for bankruptcy in the mid-1990s.

As a result, Machiavelli frames were rarely ordered and remained virtually unknown, even within the optical industry.

They also lacked one key ingredient: celebrity backing. While Luigi Colani proudly wore his own bold designs in public, no high-profile figure ever stepped out wearing these distinctive rimless Machiavelli frames – perhaps simply because no one even knew they existed.

Could Machiavelli finally get its moment in the spotlight?

Today, consumer attitudes are shifting once again. A growing number of eyewear enthusiasts appreciate the unmatched quality of vintage designs and the uniqueness of true rarities.

We believe these Machiavelli frames are perfect for people who see eyewear as more than just vision correction – but as personal expression.

Just imagine what would happen if someone like Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, or Madonna were photographed wearing one of these original Machiavelli designs. The status of these frames would change overnight.
