Christian Roth, co-founder of Optical Affairs and one of the most influential eyewear designers of the past decades, wrote this text himself. A rare, personal perspective on the creative journey behind his iconic collections.

 

 

Vision in Motion: The Collections that Defined a Design Language

Though never formally named, our eyewear collections trace a thoughtful journey through the visual languages of urban life, contemporary art, and design history. Each eyewear series captures a moment—a cultural imprint, distilled into frames.

We began with Series A, a study in restraint and balance. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, this minimalist chapter embraced clean geometries and functional clarity. It laid the foundation of our eyewear design philosophy: purposeful form with no superfluous detail.

Then came the raw energy of the streets. Series 2800 and 2700 drew from the rugged dynamism of New York City’s delivery bikers. Nicknamed the Urban Mask, these vintage sunglasses echoed the protective anonymity of the city’s night riders—bold, functional, and unapologetically present.

The aesthetic turned sharply architectural with the KL Series—an homage to brutalism and its most iconic interpreter, Karl Lagerfeld. These bold statement frames favored structural gravitas: monolithic forms, stark contours, and a dramatic sense of presence.

Our most theatrical chapter: Series 4001, 5555, 6555, 6558, followed by Series 6559. Oversized, glamorous, and unapologetically expressive, these frames celebrated excess with elegance. Each pair made a statement—not inspired by a place or movement, but by the audacity of vision itself.

This body of work, shaped in the shadow of New York, Tokyo, and Paris, offers no singular narrative. It is a collection of scenes, moods, and moments. Always in motion. Always informed by the world as we see it.

Unmistakable by Design

At Optical Affairs, design has never been defined by a single feature or fixed signature. There are no trademark hinges, no proprietary materials, no visible logos. Instead, our design language is one of form, proportion, color, and tone—a quiet precision that speaks to those who know.

We have never aimed to create eyewear that announces itself. Instead, we explore the dialogue between scale and silhouette, subtle shifts in color, and the tension between edge and curve. This design ethos resists categorization—yet remains unmistakably ours.

For over four decades, this understated approach has resonated with connoisseurs—those who value essence over embellishment. They’ve recognized our spirit not in repetition, but in evolution. Each chapter distinct, yet inherently Christian Rot

A Craft in Transit: From West Berlin to the Dolomites to the Land of the Rising Sun

Between 1983 and 1997, Optical Affairs eyewear was shaped by a quiet obsession with quality and a steadfast dedication to craftsmanship. The journey began in West Berlin, where the first Series A frames were produced in small, almost artisanal quantities.

Production then moved to Oyonnax, France—long known as the cradle of French eyewear. In the mid-90s, we crossed continents to collaborate with Murai in Fukui City, Japan, where masterful precision met our pursuit of refinement.

The decade ended in Italy, in a village high in the Dolomites—rumored to be home to the highest eyewear factory in the world. Our craftsmanship had many homes, including Austria. But the spirit always remained constant.

A Design Language That Speaks to All

From the start, we never designed for a demographic—but from an idea. Our eyewear was never intended for a particular age, gender, or background. Instead, it was shaped by form, proportion, and attitude—universal principles.

This conviction found validation in the real world. Our glamorous silhouettes were first embraced by the elegant women of Madison Avenue—chic, powerful, and discerning. Soon after, the same frames appeared on red carpets, in underground clubs, and on the faces of rising icons.

Perhaps no style embodies this better than the Series 6558—first photographed in Vogue, later worn by Kurt Cobain. Suddenly, it wasn’t just fashion—it was history. Like many of our frames, it wasn’t planned. It simply resonated.

This is the essence of Optical Affairs: a design language that speaks not to one—but to all.

Chosen, Not Chased

We’ve never relied on celebrity endorsements. That was a conscious choice—a principle. We never gifted frames to court fame. It felt too calculated.

Still, we take quiet pride in the fact that certain public figures chose our eyewear—not because they were asked, but because they wanted to. They bought it. They wore it. And some became our muses.

Every designer needs at least one muse—someone whose presence sharpens vision. Many of ours preferred to remain behind the lenses, hidden from flashbulbs. And that felt right.

But time brings perspective. And in that spirit, we honor those deeply connected to our work:

Kate Moss, age 17, wore the now-iconic Series 4001 in her first major editorial. In 2025, she reimagined that silhouette in her ZARA collaboration—a full-circle tribute we consider the ultimate compliment.

Eyewear with a Conscience | Designers for a Cause

In 1990, Christian Roth became the first eyewear designer invited to join the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)—a major milestone for fashion eyewear. His induction was championed by Vogue’s Candy Pratts Price, supported by Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, and Marc Jacobs.

In 2014, Christian co-founded edCFDA, the eyewear designers’ group within the CFDA, alongside Gai Gherardi, Selima Salaun, and Blake Kuwahara. Its mission: promote awareness for independent eyewear design through education, collaboration, and mentorship. Christian chaired the group until 2024.

At Optical Affairs, founded in 1983 by Christian Roth and Eric Domege, eyewear has always meant more than aesthetics. Their mission: to make people look—and live—better. True style, after all, includes purpose and social impact.
